With the current expansion of “State Lotteries and Casino’s,” comes the fastest GROWING addiction to date addicted compulsive gambling. It’s also touching the lives of our late teens and college kids too!
Currently of the 17+million problem or addicted gamblers in just the 1/2 that number is now teens & college young adults! So parents, it’s time to add addicted gambling to the list of when you speak to your kids about sex, drugs, and drinking. I will “RAISE AWARENESS” about this cunning, baffling, and destructive addiction form some all through the month of March.

Another way you can help ME? If there is a Blog Post that you may think can be helpful for your readers of YOUR BLOG, then simply Re-blog it on your BLOG. My personal feelings? I don’t think gambling needs to be banned or deleted, No…..I do however want to let the public know the dangers of becoming addicted and how easy it happens.

So being in recovery over 7 years, my JOB & Mission is to let others know the “UGLY-SIDE” of a form of Fun and Entertainment. If you gamble? Then gamble responsibly.
Set a time and money limit when you gamble. Leave credit cards and ATM cards at home, so you won’t be tempted to go over your set limit. And, I just want others to KNOW, there are MANY of us out here who can not GAMBLE anymore in that way. AND YES, addicted compulsive gambling is a “REAL DISEASE”……

The National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) is pleased to present the National Problem Gambling Awareness Month (NPGAM) campaign, a grassroots public awareness and outreach campaign. The goal of this campaign is to educate the general public, and health care professionals about the warning signs of problem gambling and raise awareness about the help that is available both locally and nationally. The campaign was previously held during the first week of March to coincide with March Madness, one of the most widely bet upon events in the U.S. Now, the campaign takes place during the entire month of March!

The National Council on Problem Gambling is the national advocate for programs and services to aid problem gamblers and their families. The mission of the NCPG is to increase public awareness of pathological gambling, ensure the widespread availability of treatment for problem gamblers and their families, and to encourage research and programs for prevention and education.
The National Council is neither for nor against legalized gambling. Our primary concern is to help problem gamblers and their families.
The NCPG was conceived as the national representative of the problem gambling field and is organized with 3 classes of members: state affiliate, corporate and individual. The NCPG concentrates efforts on the national level, while the state affiliates work at the state and local level.
Major National Council programs include:
- Operation of the National Problem Gambling Helpline Network (800-522-4700). A single national access point to local resources.
- Administration of the National Certified Gambling Counselor (NCGC) credential.
- Holding the annual National Conference on the Prevention, Treatment, Research and Recovery of Problem Gambling. The world’s oldest and largest problem gambling-specific conference.
- Distribution of literature on problem gambling treatment, research and recovery.
- Organization of National Problem Gambling Awareness Week.
- Providing education on problem gambling issues to Federal, state, tribal and international governments and agencies.
History: The organization was founded in 1972 by Msgr. Joseph A. Dunne and Dr. Robert Custer, among others. From the outset the Council established two principles that remain in effect today: that the organization would be the advocate for problem gamblers and their families, and that it would take no position for or against legalized gambling. This stance is encompassed today in our vision and mission statements above. A history of the NCPG from 1972 to 1985 by Msgr. Dunne was published in the Journal of Gambling Studies, Vol. 1, Issue 1.

NCPG’s National Problem Gambling Helpline answers calls for help 24/7, 365 days a year. These calls are confidential, so we don’t share any details, but we know that there are mothers, fathers, grandparents and children who call because they or someone they know is in trouble. Maybe they spent their rent money on gambling. Maybe they have neglected the other areas of their lives by spending too much time gambling. They may have jeopardized their job through gambling. And so they call our Helpline,
1-800-422-5700….

The NCPG Helpline Network instantly routes these calls to the appropriate center, where immediate crisis help is available. Up to 20% of problem gamblers attempt suicide, so this important resource must be maintained. The call centers also provide information and referrals – contacts and counselors in the caller’s local area where they can get further help from a real live human – who is so much more than a number. Next year we will continue exploring how to provide the helpline service in ways that today’s lifestyles demand, including texting and online chat – help that no one can overhear but that can nevertheless save a life or a career.
