Our Mothers, Our Daughters by Candace Gish reminds us that the relationship shared between mother and daughter is deep. It’s not always positive, but it defines the identity of both mother and daughter and the way that the world sees them. We grow together and learn together and, for better or worse, we create ourselves in the image of the other. It’s like a road trip, one that takes many dips and turns and leads us, hopefully, to a positive and pre-destined place. As Jacqueline Biollo writes in her story, Alethea, “Metaphorically, road trips, like relationships, can be expensive.

They take time and energy to foster. But with some planning, we can successfully navigate the road ahead and avoid some bumps along the way. Relationships can be adventurous and advantageous to exploring new things, building confidence, and making memories.” Simply put, life and relationships are journeys we must take that will lead us to places unknown.

Candace Gish’s book, Our Mothers, Our Daughters, is an anthology of stories honoring the mother-daughter dynamic. This book is part of the Divas That Care Collection, bringing together the positive and the negative (and the most loving and challenging) connections that define who we are. The stories feature three distinct themes: Connection, Inner Self, and Unconditional Love. The accounts are meant to inspire all of us mothers and daughters as we embark on the mission of bonding and love (or, sadly, the lack thereof). Some of the stories may spark a similar memory in the reader’s mother-daughter relationship. The narratives are accompanied by prompts and suggestions to further strengthen, or at least comprehend, the complexity that makes up our own stories.

Through the words of other mothers and daughters, this anthology will both inspire and encourage all of us to look deeper into our emotions as we make that poignant, sometimes difficult, journey.

Our Mothers, Our Daughters: The Stories That Make And Create Our Lives (Divas That Care Collection) is an anthology of non-fiction stories that revolve around maternal relationships and the ties that bind mothers and daughters. The collection has multiple individual authors who share a slice of their stories with the contributions having been pulled together into its present book format by Candace Gish.

The stories range from the inspiring My Daughter, My Valentine by Brenda Pearce in which the author, who thought she couldn’t have more kids, feels an overwhelming desire for a baby while admiring a newborn girl at work. Weeks later, she discovers she’s pregnant and gives birth to a healthy baby girl on Valentine’s Day, whom she considers a miracle and a gift from the Divine; to A Study in Golden Rule and Persistence by Rosanna Pittella, wherein Pittella recounts her decision to send her gifted daughter Jessica to school at 18 months old, despite opposition from others. Jessica thrived and went on to earn three degrees.

All told, Our Mothers, Our Daughters by Candace Gish contains over two dozen stories that each pack a huge heartwarming punch despite their compact sizes. I like that the stories are categorized into three distinct and interconnected parts: Connection, Inner-Self, and Unconditional Love. I was most touched by My Beautiful Miracle by Jennifer Herron who reflects on the joys and challenges of raising her daughter Lauren, who was born premature and faced health and developmental obstacles.

Through their journey together, Herron has learned the importance of embracing uniqueness and adapting to the unknown, and she feels truly blessed to have learned so much from her daughter. All of the stories are polished and wonderfully composed, and I loved that each section ends with action steps, journal prompts, and affirmations. I walked away from this collection feeling whole and happy and completely fulfilled.

Very highly recommended.

“One Soul’s Journey is the second collection of short slice-of-life stories by Barbara Daniels Dena. Containing both fictional and autobiographical tales, this anthology is an original piece of work covering decades of the author’s life experiences. The book begins with Dena sharing anecdotes from her childhood, witnessing the Jim Crow laws in effect during the late 50s and early 60s in Arkansas.

Some of the other tales include a little girl and her mother losing her baby sister with chaotic ramifications, the life of an Irish Setter at a dog rescue center, a mother and son volunteering as dressed mascots at the local zoo, striking up a burgeoning friendship with her first customer at the flower shop, delivering flowers to the wrong address, and many more.

If you love to read heartwarming and wholesome short stories, One Soul’s Journey is a must-read for you. Barbara Daniels Dena’s smooth prose and skillful storytelling style make the narrative a breeze. Complemented by some truly fascinating tales, it makes for a fantastic reading experience. Dena has a way with words that will have readers engaged from the outset, and some of the stories have revelations thrown in along the way that will leave you pleasantly surprised.

These stories have underlying themes of compassion, kindness, and love and highlight how helping others can go a long way to making you feel fulfilled. I had a wonderful time reading the book and recommend it to anyone who is looking to raise their spirits through a relaxing read.”

Book Review For Sweet Dreams, Baby BelleReviewed by Jennifer Ibiam for Readers’ Favorite – Book One of ‘A Clara and Iris Mystery Series’

“Lizzy was a simple waitress who lived from one paycheck to the next.
Her life changed when the suave cardiac surgeon, Dr. Grant Chatsworth, came into the restaurant as a customer. The two fell in love, got married, and lived the fairytale. Unfortunately, things started going downhill six months after the wedding. Grant’s affection for Lizzie died, physical and emotional abuse stepped in, and she became a prisoner in her own home. The situation worsened when she discovered that the respectable yet arrogant doctor was involved in fraudulent drug research and would go to any lengths to achieve his dream. Grant imprisoned her in his gated estate, and she was in danger with no one to help her escape.

Follow the full story by reading Sweet Dreams, Baby Belle: A Clara and Iris Mystery Series by Kim Carter. Sweet Dreams, Baby Belle is a captivating story cloaked in mystery and intrigue. This is one of the most unpredictable stories I have read. I loved the plot, storyline, and development. The characters were outstanding, and there were lessons to be learned. For one, women should not let anyone strip them of their financial independence, no matter how little they earn. Also, any relationship that intentionally isolates you from your loved ones is an impending red flag. I love to see women step up to protect a sister, as we should. Mariana, Daisy, Clara, and Iris were heroines, and Lizzie was a courageous woman. I cannot get over the twist with Antoine Rayne. The enemy does indeed live within.

Kim Carter is a fantastic storyteller, and this is a great introductory novel.
Thank you for such a gripping but refreshing read.”

Second Book Review of ‘Murder Among The Tombstones’ – Reviewed by Viga Boland for Readers’ Favorite – Book Two of ‘A Clara and Iris Mystery Series’

“After I finished reading Murder Among the Tombstones, the second of the Clara and Iris Mystery Series, I found myself briefly thinking more about the incredible skill of the author, Kim Carter, than the story itself. How cleverly she hooked me in that exciting opening chapter about a young woman running from a predator in a dense forest! Then, she further reeled me in as police puzzled over why the corpse of a beautiful young woman was found gently wrapped in a pink blanket in a cemetery. All ready for what I anticipated would be a thrilling mystery murder, suddenly everything changed! A pair of delightful old biddies, Clara and Iris, whisked me into their newly acquired Private Eye office and had me in stitches with their humorous banter.

Well, what just happened was a novel approach to murder mystery writing by easing mounting tension with comic relief, not unlike what Shakespeare did in some of his tragedies. Initially, I wasn’t sure I liked this break in the plot, but these two lively seniors, with their chalk-and-cheese personalities, grew on me so much that I looked forward to their intrusions. The reserved, refined Clara was forever embarrassed by that outspoken, colorful flirt, Iris, who delighted in proving she was far from over the hill.

While Clara and Iris are trying to figure out how to run their agency and use their new iPhones, how does Carter manage to bring these two senior sleuths bang smack into the middle of the primary plot, where cops are being shot by drug-addicted felons and yet another young woman is running for her life from a serial killer? That, dear readers, is due to the remarkable writing skills of Kim Carter. It’s delightful to experience Carter bringing together such diverse characters for a unique spin on a murder mystery. Murder Among the Tombstones is an easy read, with the plot and sub-plots moving quickly thanks to the constant use of clever dialogue.

There’s an abundance of colorful characters, dramatic settings, a delightful amount of humor, and enough unexpected twists to keep the most ardent mystery fans guessing. But it’s the personalities of Clara and Iris that will have readers looking forward to the next book in this series.
Enjoy!”

Interview Courtesy of Newsbreak Media

What inspired you to write your first book?

My first book was just for fun, and it helped me get started as a writer. I moved into writing both thrilling mystery fiction and nonfiction, like ‘The Silver Woman of Fire.’

Do you have a specific writing style?

My style and writing process are somewhat unconventional. It is difficult to explain what it is. But I do rely on a writing plan and outline.

How did you come up with the title?

The title for “The Silver Woman of Fire” I played around with different titles and finally decided on this one. It truly matches what is inside this book of self-care and walking through fear. Specially written for women of all ages.

What has influenced you the most as a writer?

The fact that I can write my books sure continues to inspire me through the years. Especially my twin sister, who has recently passed, who had always been a help to me, very supportive, and an amazing cheerleader t keep me writing.

Are experiences based on someone you know or events in your own life?

They include many events in my life. In “Silver Woman” I wanted to relay to other women what I have learned through life lessons while not letting fear hold you back in life and experiencing true authentic spiritual freedoms.

What books have influenced your life the most?

Throughout life, I have been a reader of all kinds of books. Richard Moss, M.D. continues to inspire me.

What book are you reading now?

Books by the late author Thich Nhat Hanh. He was a former Buddist Monk, peace activist, prolific author, poet, and teacher, who is known for and founded the Plum Village Tradition.

What are your current projects?

I am working on a new non-fiction book and another fiction suspense mystery book both to be published in 2023.

Do you see writing as a career?

Yes, it has continued to be my career for, I hope, more years to come. I know many striving to become a writer have a day job unless it doesn’t matter or you are retired like I am now.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

Not one thing! I enjoy sharing my wisdom in my non-fiction books.

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?

Perhaps as a child, when I wrote funny stories about other kids and animals. I loved writing stories about animals.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

To keep focused and centered. I keep a schedule and try not to get off track or distracted by other ideas and projects. Sometimes it’s hard to turn off my “imagination!”

Who is your favorite author, and what is it that strikes you about their work?

To be honest, l don’t have a favorite author because I like so many, however, one thing that I look for in a book is ‘CURIOSITY.’ Does it grab my attention or peek at my curiosity? That is because I have a thirst for knowledge and learning.

Do you have to travel much concerning your book(s)?

Not at all. Ever now that we are post-Covid. I don’t need to travel to book events as we have many in California I could be a part of.

Who designed the covers?

Deborah Perdue of Illumination Graphics. She is out of Southern Oregon and is an award-winning designer. www.illuminationgraphics.com and also handles my interior book designs.

What was the most challenging part of writing your book?

It was my first fiction novel, and I had so much to learn. Nonetheless, my passion for writing and publishing my book carried me through, regardless of any ups and downs.

Did you learn anything from writing your book, and what was it?

To believe in me as a writer and not to give up. You have to start by writing for fun and pleasure. You, then, naturally become more seasoned as a writer with each book.

Do you have any advice for other writers?

Tough questions. If you need to take a writing class, do so from a published writer. Honor your own writing style with confidence and stick with it. Forget about becoming a best-selling author. A trick to get writers interested, and often leads to stress and disappointment.

Look for a solid marketer who promotes it. I have Catherine Lyon of https://catlyonsreadingden.com of “Lyon Literary Marketing Services” who handles that side while I focus on just the writing. Enjoy the writing process as you strive to become a good writer. And don’t give up your day job! (Lol.)

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

“Please, enjoy my fiction and non-fiction books for your pleasure and inspiration. I write for you, the reader, and not for myself, so that gives me great joy to continue doing this for you.

What were the challenges (research, literary, psychological, and logistical) in bringing your books to life?

The publishing process! Finding people with expertise and integrity to help me achieve my literary goals. Sometimes it takes a literary village!

What genre do you consider your book(s)?

I write both unique suspense fiction and non-fiction inspirational books.

Do you ever experience writer’s block?

Believe it or not, I have not yet had that experience. But not to say it may never happen.

Do you write an outline before every book you write?

Sometimes, but I am an extremely unconventional writer.

Most often, I don’t always use an outline. I would not recommend it.

Have you ever hated something you wrote?

Lol, not yet.

If you had the opportunity to live anywhere in the world for a year while writing a book that took place in that same setting, where would you choose?

Exactly where I am and live, in beautiful Santa Barbara, California.

Picture this: You feel uninspired, and you’ve sat at the computer for an hour without conquering any words. How do you get your creativity flowing?

I would take a break and play with my dog, walk on the beach, tease my husband, and suck on a peach. (Lol.)

If you have pictures on your writing desk, who/what are they of?

On one side, I have a cloth angel that I found hanging on my mailbox in a storm. I have a dragon and a porcelain elephant.

Elizabeth Upton is not just an American Author, but also an influential writer of fiction and nonfiction spiritual books. Her work spans a variety of genres, including young adult literature, spirituality, and memoir. She has written several bestsellers, and her work has been praised for its insightfulness and ability to communicate complex spiritual concepts in an accessible manner. ~Reviewed By K.C. Finn for Readers’ Favorite ~ Dec. 2022

Pearly Everlasting is a work of fiction in the literary style and family drama subgenre.
The work is best suited to the mature adult reading audience owing to its potentially distressing subject matter and the inclusion of explicit language and sexual situations. Penned by Claudia Ricci, this harrowing and heartfelt interpersonal drama follows the meeting of protagonists Salvia Fischetti and Morgan Pochyrus. A painter wracked with guilt and a biker poet find more than just their artistic souls connecting as they battle to save an infant from a terrifying illness, and what develops is a series of emotional challenges that will bring them both closer to one another, and closer to the healing they’ve always desired.

Claudia Ricci has a keen sense of character that lends itself to this style of storytelling, so much so that you begin to feel that you know Salvia and Morgan personally within just a few pages of meeting them. I enjoyed the close narration and craftwork in the dialogue, which gives each character their distinct parlance but never loses the artsy stylistic edge that reminds you of the beauty of the author’s wordplay.

Plot-wise, there’s much to enjoy, with a slow-burning start that contextualizes Salvia’s great loss and deep pain. There are some heart-breaking parallels drawn and difficult moments later that echo back perfectly to the opening chapters to leave readers feeling satisfied with the journey of growth and healing that’s taken place.

I would not hesitate to recommend Pearly Everlasting to fans of artistic and literary writing that also digs deep into human emotion and connection.”

A MESSAGE FROM THE AUTHOR
CLAUDIA RICCI

Dear Readers –

By some extraordinary coincidence, my new novel, Pearly Everlasting, is coming out in the very same week that my beautiful new grandson, Monte, arrived in Denver!  As I sat down to try to figure out what to say about this, my fourth book, I remembered two words that my chiropractor said to me this week: Baby Love.

There is nothing like the love a mother feels when her baby, usually purply blue and slippery, is placed for the first time on her chest. There is nothing like the outpouring of love that explodes from mom and dad to family and friends after that baby is born!

Well, so, you could say this book has at its core Baby Love.  Because it is Baby Love in the end that captures the protagonists and wraps them in a blanket of redemption.

At this season 20 years ago, I had just finished a grueling four-month treatment for Hodgkin’s Disease, a type of lymphoma that – very thankfully – is curable. I suffered enormously that year during chemo – an experimental treatment that involved five IV cancer drugs each week for 13 weeks – followed by eight weeks of radiation. But as my oncologist said at the end, “I was a poster child” for triumphing over the disease. I am continually and forever grateful for my good health.

Not long afterward, my very good friend Karen Jahn said to me, “So now you’ve proved it, Claudia, you can get through anything!”

I looked at her and felt my breath catch.  I felt my stomach sink. “No,” I said, shaking my head back and forth. “Absolutely not.  I know for sure that’s not true. There’s one thing I just cannot imagine how I would get through…losing one of my three children.”

And so, I suppose it was this deep fear that led me to write my fourth novel, Pearly Everlasting. The main character, Sal – short for Salvia, an Italian name that means “safe, secure, healthy” — loses her teenage daughter Sofie in a car accident. Sal, who feels responsible, sprang to life in my imagination with a wound so deep that she begged me to stay with her, to keep her company in her lonely struggle to overcome her endless grief.

When the story opens, it’s been four years since Sofie’s passing, but memories are everywhere and they always land Sal in an ocean of tears.

I know that my fictional character is just that. A character in a book. I know, too, that there are many, many fine non-fiction books written by parents who have lost their adored children. Books that can help others deal with this unspeakable grief.

I don’t pretend to think my book falls into that category.  It’s just a story.  A story with a very redemptive ending.  But sometimes I have wondered, do I have the right to produce a fictional account of one woman’s unspeakable sorrow? When I haven’t had to endure that sorrow myself?

And then I hear and see Sal, and she is whispering to me, “Yes, please, this story is important, vital,” because it shows how life can go on in unexpected ways after the gut-wrenching loss of a loved one.

With that in mind, I offer readers Pearly Everlasting, which follows Sal into an unexpected relationship with a young woman who is pregnant. And also, into a relationship with a man – poet Morgan Pochyrus — who is also grieving the loss of a friend. Guilt reigns for both Sal and Morgan.

Light emerges in the book, however, as the two of them are forced to care for an infant with a life-threatening illness. It makes me feel good to know how the characters land at the end.

I hope you will give it a try!
