Richard E. LaMotte is an accomplished author and writer. Now retired from the film and motion picture industry, Richard is devoting his time to his love of stories and spending time with his wife Patricia in Valencia, California. His newest novel, “The Song of Ramon and Maria” was released in September 2022.

Tell readers a little about yourself and what you do today other than writing.

Aside from writing, I enjoy being retired and doing retired people stuff, reading, working in the garden, going to the gym, and having fun and traveling with my wife. I used to draw and paint more and have some work online at some gallery sites (FASO, Fine Art America), but I don’t do that as much anymore. Maybe this Spring, I will get re-inspired.

What inspired you to write your first book?

I love telling stories. I’ve always enjoyed stories that communicated something, some emotion, or moments of experience from someone’s past that offered insight into something I could never know otherwise. I love imagination also, the world of imagination. Combining events and characters from experience and imagination into a new story that communicates something to others became irresistible.

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?

I think it’s connected to being very young and listening to my father tell me stories about his experiences in the First World War as a flyer or my mother and her sisters talking about the Mexican Revolution. I think those moments, being young and hearing the grown-ups talk about past events, history, about a world gone into the past, conjured-up images that I wanted to write down. Not knowing, years later, I would write a novel about those memories.

Do you have a specific writing style?

No. I studied screenwriting at UCLA and SC extension classes and took a summer of Film-Making at Art Center Pasadena, CA, and I’ve had the opportunity to read dozens of Movie Scripts, so the three-act format is pretty well ingrained in my approach to writing. But my reading ranges from F. Scott Fitzgerald to Elmore Leonard and includes Oscar Wild and even Frederic Remington, so I like to assume the style that I think best fits the material.

I used to outline the story on 3×5 cards; now, I start with an Idea (Theme) and a Character, research a setting (story world) and just start. I know act one will run about fifty to a hundred pages and so on.

How did you come up with the title?

‘The Song of Ramon and Maria.’ During the Mexican revolution, a music style was created in Mexico that reflected the troubled times. It’s called a ‘Corrida.’ A Corrida is a kind of poetic ballad, sometimes a cautionary, heart-breaking story of star-crossed lovers. That’s what I wanted to try and write – a heart-breaking story of star-crossed lovers in the context of Mexico’s revolution, but universal in its humanity. Most people won’t relate to the title as I do, but I tried to reinforce the idea with the illustration I did for the book cover.

What has influenced you the most as a writer?

Probably my background in filmmaking. I worked for years helping to bring other people’s ideas to the movie screen, and I love the magic of that kind of idea transmission, but I want to create some stories of my own through writing.

Are experiences based on someone you know or events in your own life?

I get story material daily from everywhere, including my memories and past life experiences.

What books have influenced your life the most?

Early on, probably the Bible. Later I read pulp fiction, Private Detective stories like “Shell Scott” and others, sometimes big historical fiction works. They all impressed me with the enjoyment I received, enabling me to experience worlds outside my own.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

Staying off of ‘YouTube.’ (Lol)… Actually, I like the challenge. A good challenge pulls things out of you, strengths you didn’t know you had or reveals weaknesses or areas to work on. Keeps you on edge, awake, and alive.

Who designed the covers?

My wife and I do. I painted the cover for “Ramon and Maria.” The photos used for “Crime Story” and “The Treasure” were pulled, purchased, and manipulated by my wife (who is also my reader, editor, formats, and publisher.) As for my film costume book, “Costume Design 101,” I painted the cover for the first edition (Actually a costume sketch from “The Wind and the Lion.”) and the publisher did the cover for the second edition.

Who is your favorite author, and what is it that strikes you about their work?

Honestly, I don’t have a favorite. I like Oscar Wilde’s humor and word choices, Elmore Leonard’s easy story-telling ability and dialogue, Joseph Wambaugh’s throw-away grittiness, and Stephen King’s slyness. So many others. I can’t pick, but I do love reading!

Do you ever experience writer’s block?

Sure. When I do, I try and find the source of the block. Is it, ‘I’m out of ideas?’, I’m just ‘tired’, ‘I don’t like this story anymore.’

From there, I fall back until I rediscover my reason for starting and what I found interesting about the original idea, then try and re-focus my energy on a solution. I have about five or six stories open on my computer, so I can switch back and forth and don’t have to stop writing altogether. Actually, working like that means that a story situation I initially thought worked in one story I sometimes find works better in another.

Did you learn anything from writing your book, and what was it?

Don’t ever give up. If it’s a solid idea, it’s waiting there to be uncovered. Just write everything you know about the idea and keep rewriting, honing, researching, and shaping until it’s what you want. It’s like any art project, it can lead you if you let it.

Where would you choose if you could live anywhere in the world for a year while writing your next book?

A condo in Waikiki, or a riad in Marrakech, and a place overlooking the sea in the south of Spain.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

I hope you enjoy reading my novels as I wrote them for you, the reader. I sure hope more readers will hear or learn that my novels are available. I am fascinated by reading their book reviews and comments. It helps me know if they like what I am writing. Even what they experience as they escape into a new world through my novels and through written words, if only for a few hours.

“This is one of the best mysteries I have read in a long time. I am a 77-year-old woman and have the entire book in the ‘Clara and Iris Series!’ Kept me in suspense the entire book. I would say that Ms. Carter is up there with Patricia Cornwell as far as keeping you in gripping suspense to the book’s last few pages. I highly recommend all of them to readers!”

Best-Selling American Author Pavane Ravel & Her Political Fiction Suspense Drama of “The Other Shoes of Lary Martin” Novel Series Book One – ‘Revelation of Lies’
 $1.99!
https://www.amazon.com/Other-Shoes-Larry-Martin-Revelation-ebook/dp/B09CRPH41P/

Reviewed By Reader’s Favorite:

Larry Martin is not a good person. He is lazy. He treats women badly. He thinks the world owes him everything that he wants but hasn’t earned. Unfortunately, Larry was also raised by an abusive father with right-wing beliefs, which he adopted as his own. What more can one expect from a person raised without love? Then Larry loses his job as a journalist and eventually loses his home as well.

Larry decides to shed his old self and change. He decides to become a better person.
Pavane Ravel has a writing style that is easy to fall into. It is comfortable and has a good flow. There is definitely good character-building.

As this book is based on profound character growth, the author does a remarkable job of slowly easing the reader along on the journey. I found the attention to detail with the construction of the various homesteads quite interesting. The Other Shoes of Larry Martin is ideal for readers who enjoy extraordinary character changes, fighting for survival and climbing to the top to make a change for the better.

This book can also be recommended to those readers who want to know themselves on a deeper level. I loved how the story itself became the story of the book.

“Ronda’s story in Seeing Red made sense to me, and the writing touched me viscerally and emotionally. I could feel her challenges, pain, and desire; life was tearing her apart. I felt drawn in from the very first paragraph.

She goes to Spain to follow her fantasy lover and pursue her love for flamenco; what she finds there through her wild adventures is the most important thing missing – her love for herself.

Sharing From Award-Winning Blog of Two Drops of Ink… A Beautiful Tribute and The Legacy of Author Marilyn L. Davis by Scott Biddulph. . .

In Memory of Marilyn L. Davis: Goodbye to my dear friend and ‘big sis’

marilyn l davis two drops of ink hat

I owe an apology to all the followers and to the contributors of this site because it’s been a long time since anyone has said or done anything here. That’s because, as many of you now know, our dear friend and mentor Marilyn L. Davis passed away on June 11 of this year. I didn’t find out about her passing until September. I found out through one of the former contributors to the site who was emailing me and was unaware that I did not know she had passed.

It hit me like a ton of bricks. It froze me in time. It placed some major decisions in my lap that I was not ready for, and, frankly, that Marilyn and I had never discussed. Believe it or not, in all the years we were together, and with all of the things we shared in conversation, we never discussed what would happen with this site if something were to happen to her. It’s hard for me to believe (in reflection) because she had more foresight than me in those kinds of matters. So I apologize to all of you that it has taken me this long to simply make a decision and to write something on this blog.

So here we go.

First and foremost, I’m not gonna make this a fancy post with all the elaborate subtitles and wonderful graphics that Marilyn would always include. She was so talented, and she didn’t even know it. Rather, I’m just going to be raw and honest and tell our story as a final tribute to my beloved big sister. That’s what I called her, “big sis”… Marilyn and I met a long time ago – I would have to say it would’ve been more than 20 years ago. At that time, I was a thriving member of the recovery community in the North Georgia area and didn’t know her extremely well, but everybody knew about Marilyn and her women’s recovery house called The North House. I was a member of a motorcycle club that also attached itself to the recovery community…

You may continue reading this beautiful tribute and in honor of Marilyn’s legacy… I hope everyone who visits my website will click on the link and read the rest of this fine post on Marilyn’s “Two Drops Of Ink.” I still miss her desperately.

She left all writers and authors after her the true and pure passion for writing…

BIOGRAPHY

In Loving Memory and In Honor of Her Legacy
Marilyn L Davis Passed on June 11th, 2022

Marilyn Davis was the author of her debut memoir titled “Finding North: A Journey from Addict to Advocate” and her second book “Memories into Memoir: The Mindsets and Mechanics Workbook,” both released in 2011. You can support the family at this time by purchasing both online from Amazon, Barnes & Noble and many online bookstores.

Marilyn recently celebrated 33 years of abstinence-based recovery before her passing. From 1990 to 2011, she opened and managed North House, an award-winning residential facility for women.

Marilyn was widely known for writing in many literary communities, including her award-winning website “Two Drops of Ink,” where she encouraged many in collaborative writing. She was the Editor-in-Chief and From Addict 2 Advocate, another award-winning site where she was the Editor-in-Chief and wrote for the recovering community.

Marilyn was also a Certified Addiction Recovery Empowerment Specialist. Before reaching her goals and milestones, though, she was a desperate woman on drugs, managing rock bands at night, pretending to be okay, but ultimately giving up on herself, losing her husband, children, family, and friends due to her addiction. Her past had never defined who she was and the multitudes she has helped from addiction.

Her memoir is about that journey.

When she wasn’t writing or advocating, Marilyn was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening and cooking. She had raised two beautiful grown daughters, both of whom are in recovery. Marilyn resided in the state she loved Georgia, at the time of her passing.

Interview Courtesy of Newsbreak Media

What inspired you to write your first book?

My first book was just for fun, and it helped me get started as a writer. I moved into writing both thrilling mystery fiction and nonfiction, like ‘The Silver Woman of Fire.’

Do you have a specific writing style?

My style and writing process are somewhat unconventional. It is difficult to explain what it is. But I do rely on a writing plan and outline.

How did you come up with the title?

The title for “The Silver Woman of Fire” I played around with different titles and finally decided on this one. It truly matches what is inside this book of self-care and walking through fear. Specially written for women of all ages.

What has influenced you the most as a writer?

The fact that I can write my books sure continues to inspire me through the years. Especially my twin sister, who has recently passed, who had always been a help to me, very supportive, and an amazing cheerleader t keep me writing.

Are experiences based on someone you know or events in your own life?

They include many events in my life. In “Silver Woman” I wanted to relay to other women what I have learned through life lessons while not letting fear hold you back in life and experiencing true authentic spiritual freedoms.

What books have influenced your life the most?

Throughout life, I have been a reader of all kinds of books. Richard Moss, M.D. continues to inspire me.

What book are you reading now?

Books by the late author Thich Nhat Hanh. He was a former Buddist Monk, peace activist, prolific author, poet, and teacher, who is known for and founded the Plum Village Tradition.

What are your current projects?

I am working on a new non-fiction book and another fiction suspense mystery book both to be published in 2023.

Do you see writing as a career?

Yes, it has continued to be my career for, I hope, more years to come. I know many striving to become a writer have a day job unless it doesn’t matter or you are retired like I am now.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

Not one thing! I enjoy sharing my wisdom in my non-fiction books.

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?

Perhaps as a child, when I wrote funny stories about other kids and animals. I loved writing stories about animals.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

To keep focused and centered. I keep a schedule and try not to get off track or distracted by other ideas and projects. Sometimes it’s hard to turn off my “imagination!”

Who is your favorite author, and what is it that strikes you about their work?

To be honest, l don’t have a favorite author because I like so many, however, one thing that I look for in a book is ‘CURIOSITY.’ Does it grab my attention or peek at my curiosity? That is because I have a thirst for knowledge and learning.

Do you have to travel much concerning your book(s)?

Not at all. Ever now that we are post-Covid. I don’t need to travel to book events as we have many in California I could be a part of.

Who designed the covers?

Deborah Perdue of Illumination Graphics. She is out of Southern Oregon and is an award-winning designer. www.illuminationgraphics.com and also handles my interior book designs.

What was the most challenging part of writing your book?

It was my first fiction novel, and I had so much to learn. Nonetheless, my passion for writing and publishing my book carried me through, regardless of any ups and downs.

Did you learn anything from writing your book, and what was it?

To believe in me as a writer and not to give up. You have to start by writing for fun and pleasure. You, then, naturally become more seasoned as a writer with each book.

Do you have any advice for other writers?

Tough questions. If you need to take a writing class, do so from a published writer. Honor your own writing style with confidence and stick with it. Forget about becoming a best-selling author. A trick to get writers interested, and often leads to stress and disappointment.

Look for a solid marketer who promotes it. I have Catherine Lyon of https://catlyonsreadingden.com of “Lyon Literary Marketing Services” who handles that side while I focus on just the writing. Enjoy the writing process as you strive to become a good writer. And don’t give up your day job! (Lol.)

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

“Please, enjoy my fiction and non-fiction books for your pleasure and inspiration. I write for you, the reader, and not for myself, so that gives me great joy to continue doing this for you.

What were the challenges (research, literary, psychological, and logistical) in bringing your books to life?

The publishing process! Finding people with expertise and integrity to help me achieve my literary goals. Sometimes it takes a literary village!

What genre do you consider your book(s)?

I write both unique suspense fiction and non-fiction inspirational books.

Do you ever experience writer’s block?

Believe it or not, I have not yet had that experience. But not to say it may never happen.

Do you write an outline before every book you write?

Sometimes, but I am an extremely unconventional writer.

Most often, I don’t always use an outline. I would not recommend it.

Have you ever hated something you wrote?

Lol, not yet.

If you had the opportunity to live anywhere in the world for a year while writing a book that took place in that same setting, where would you choose?

Exactly where I am and live, in beautiful Santa Barbara, California.

Picture this: You feel uninspired, and you’ve sat at the computer for an hour without conquering any words. How do you get your creativity flowing?

I would take a break and play with my dog, walk on the beach, tease my husband, and suck on a peach. (Lol.)

If you have pictures on your writing desk, who/what are they of?

On one side, I have a cloth angel that I found hanging on my mailbox in a storm. I have a dragon and a porcelain elephant.

Elizabeth Upton is not just an American Author, but also an influential writer of fiction and nonfiction spiritual books. BOOK REVIEWS “For The Soul”

5.0 out of 5 stars
Delightfully charming short stories

Amazon review in the United States

For the Soul is a delightfully charming collection of short stories about everyday life, some are real, some are fanciful interpretations, and some are Ms. Dena’s creative imagination. Ms. Dena has a knack for bringing to life everyday events with humor, wit, pathos, generosity, and love.

There are many lessons to be learned. Her characterizations are authentic and likable. She finds the extraordinary in what many might find mundane and brings it to life, so the reader sees it in a new light. I found myself relating to so many of the stories. I highly recommend For the Soul, a truly enchanting read.

Excellent book. A must read

Amazon review in the United States

Reading FOR THE SOUL by Barbara Daniels Dena, I had to keep reminding myself that she and I were not related. Some of her stories could have been my stories. It was as if she reached into my past and pulled out beautiful memories that had been long forgotten. Barbara’s book gave me hours of enjoyment and a lifetime of memories. I highly recommend you fall in love with this book.

Pearly Everlasting is a work of fiction in the literary style and family drama subgenre.
The work is best suited to the mature adult reading audience owing to its potentially distressing subject matter and the inclusion of explicit language and sexual situations. Penned by Claudia Ricci, this harrowing and heartfelt interpersonal drama follows the meeting of protagonists Salvia Fischetti and Morgan Pochyrus. A painter wracked with guilt and a biker poet find more than just their artistic souls connecting as they battle to save an infant from a terrifying illness, and what develops is a series of emotional challenges that will bring them both closer to one another, and closer to the healing they’ve always desired.

Claudia Ricci has a keen sense of character that lends itself to this style of storytelling, so much so that you begin to feel that you know Salvia and Morgan personally within just a few pages of meeting them. I enjoyed the close narration and craftwork in the dialogue, which gives each character their distinct parlance but never loses the artsy stylistic edge that reminds you of the beauty of the author’s wordplay.

Plot-wise, there’s much to enjoy, with a slow-burning start that contextualizes Salvia’s great loss and deep pain. There are some heart-breaking parallels drawn and difficult moments later that echo back perfectly to the opening chapters to leave readers feeling satisfied with the journey of growth and healing that’s taken place.

I would not hesitate to recommend Pearly Everlasting to fans of artistic and literary writing that also digs deep into human emotion and connection.”

A MESSAGE FROM THE AUTHOR
CLAUDIA RICCI

Dear Readers –

By some extraordinary coincidence, my new novel, Pearly Everlasting, is coming out in the very same week that my beautiful new grandson, Monte, arrived in Denver!  As I sat down to try to figure out what to say about this, my fourth book, I remembered two words that my chiropractor said to me this week: Baby Love.

There is nothing like the love a mother feels when her baby, usually purply blue and slippery, is placed for the first time on her chest. There is nothing like the outpouring of love that explodes from mom and dad to family and friends after that baby is born!

Well, so, you could say this book has at its core Baby Love.  Because it is Baby Love in the end that captures the protagonists and wraps them in a blanket of redemption.

At this season 20 years ago, I had just finished a grueling four-month treatment for Hodgkin’s Disease, a type of lymphoma that – very thankfully – is curable. I suffered enormously that year during chemo – an experimental treatment that involved five IV cancer drugs each week for 13 weeks – followed by eight weeks of radiation. But as my oncologist said at the end, “I was a poster child” for triumphing over the disease. I am continually and forever grateful for my good health.

Not long afterward, my very good friend Karen Jahn said to me, “So now you’ve proved it, Claudia, you can get through anything!”

I looked at her and felt my breath catch.  I felt my stomach sink. “No,” I said, shaking my head back and forth. “Absolutely not.  I know for sure that’s not true. There’s one thing I just cannot imagine how I would get through
losing one of my three children.”

And so, I suppose it was this deep fear that led me to write my fourth novel, Pearly Everlasting. The main character, Sal – short for Salvia, an Italian name that means “safe, secure, healthy” — loses her teenage daughter Sofie in a car accident. Sal, who feels responsible, sprang to life in my imagination with a wound so deep that she begged me to stay with her, to keep her company in her lonely struggle to overcome her endless grief.

When the story opens, it’s been four years since Sofie’s passing, but memories are everywhere and they always land Sal in an ocean of tears.

I know that my fictional character is just that. A character in a book. I know, too, that there are many, many fine non-fiction books written by parents who have lost their adored children. Books that can help others deal with this unspeakable grief.

I don’t pretend to think my book falls into that category.  It’s just a story.  A story with a very redemptive ending.  But sometimes I have wondered, do I have the right to produce a fictional account of one woman’s unspeakable sorrow? When I haven’t had to endure that sorrow myself?

And then I hear and see Sal, and she is whispering to me, “Yes, please, this story is important, vital,” because it shows how life can go on in unexpected ways after the gut-wrenching loss of a loved one.

With that in mind, I offer readers Pearly Everlasting, which follows Sal into an unexpected relationship with a young woman who is pregnant. And also, into a relationship with a man – poet Morgan Pochyrus — who is also grieving the loss of a friend. Guilt reigns for both Sal and Morgan.

Light emerges in the book, however, as the two of them are forced to care for an infant with a life-threatening illness. It makes me feel good to know how the characters land at the end.

I hope you will give it a try!
